Joseph Drouhin is a renowned wine producer based in Burgundy, France. The family-owned winery has been producing high-quality wines for over a century, and their expertise is evident in every bottle they produce. One of their most notable wines is the Clos des Mouches, a premier cru blanc from the Beaune region.

The history of Joseph Drouhin dates back to 1880 when Joseph Drouhin founded the winery in Beaune. Since then, the family has been dedicated to producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of Burgundy. Today, the winery is run by the fourth generation of the Drouhin family, who continue to uphold the traditions and values of their ancestors.

The Clos des Mouches is a white wine made from Chardonnay grapes grown in the premier cru vineyard of the same name. The vineyard is located in the heart of the Beaune appellation and covers 14 hectares. The soil in the vineyard is rich in limestone and clay, which gives the wine its unique character and complexity.

The production of the Clos des Mouches is a meticulous process that begins with handpicking the grapes at the optimal time. The grapes are then sorted and pressed, and the juice is fermented in oak barrels. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 12 to 15 months, which gives it a rich and complex flavour profile.

The Clos des Mouches is a wine that is known for its elegance and finesse. It has a pale gold colour and a delicate aroma of white flowers and citrus fruits. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-balanced, with flavours of honey, vanilla, and toasted almonds. The finish is long and lingering, with a subtle minerality that is characteristic of wines from the Beaune region.

Overall, the Clos des Mouches is a wine that is highly sought after by wine enthusiasts and collectors around the world. It is a testament to the skill and expertise of the Drouhin family, who have been producing exceptional wines for over a century.

Mingling aromas of citrus zest and pear with hints of white flowers, buttered toast and almonds, Drouhin's 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc (Domaine) is medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with lively acids and a gourmand profile, concluding with a saline finish.
Tasted from bottle, Drouhin's 2017 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc is showing very well, offering up aromas of fresh pear, Meyer lemon and grapefruit zest that are still quite youthfully marked by a generous application of buttery new oak that experience shows will integrate nicely with a little age. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny, and textural, with racy underlying acids, a fragrant core of fruit and a long, penetrating finish. This is a very elegant, aromatic rendition of this emblematic Drouhin cuvée.
The 2015 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches has a superb bouquet with passion fruit, honeysuckle, and jasmine, very expressive at this early stage with wonderful, vibrant fruit concentration. The palate is delicious now! Outstanding balance here, razor-sharp acidity, just a touch of lemongrass rubbing the citrus fruit up the wrong way and imposing superb tension on the finish. This is a Beaune Premier Cru that is punching well above its weight and comes recommended.

Founded in Beaune in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin's cellars have spread from the historical Cellars of the Dukes of Burgundy and the Kings of France in Beaune (12th-18th centuries) to the Moulin de Vaudon, an 18th Century watermill in Chablis.

The Joseph Drouhin Domaine was assembled parcel by parcel over the years and comprises today 73 hectares (182.5 acres) of vineyards in Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Chablis. It is one of the most important domains in Burgundy, with more than two thirds of the vineyards classified as Premier and Grand Crus.

With close to 90 different appellations, Joseph Drouhin offers a fascinating array of Burgundy terroirs in all their authenticity and subtle variations.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

Beaune is a historic wine appellation located in the heart of Burgundy, France. The region is known for producing some of the finest red and white wines in the world, and has a rich history dating back to the Roman era.

The style of production in Beaune is heavily influenced by the unique terroir of the region. The vineyards are situated on a series of hillsides that provide excellent drainage and exposure to the sun, which allows the grapes to ripen fully and develop complex flavors. The soils in Beaune are also rich in limestone, which imparts a distinctive minerality to the wines.

The primary grape varieties grown in Beaune are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Pinot Noir is used to produce the region's famous red wines, which are known for their rich, complex flavors and aromas of red fruit, earth, and spice. Chardonnay is used to produce the region's white wines, which are known for their crisp acidity, bright fruit flavors, and subtle notes of oak.

The most famous wines from Beaune are its Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines. These wines are made from grapes grown in the best vineyards in the region, and are carefully crafted to showcase the unique terroir of each site. Premier Cru wines are known for their balance of fruit and acidity, while Grand Cru wines are more complex and age-worthy, with layers of flavor that develop over time.

In addition to its red and white wines, Beaune is also known for its sparkling wines, which are made using the traditional method. These wines are crisp and refreshing, with delicate bubbles and flavors of citrus and green apple.

Overall, Beaune is a region that is steeped in history and tradition, and its wines are a testament to the skill and dedication of its winemakers. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or a casual drinker, a bottle of wine from Beaune is sure to impress.
