Hints of rosemary and black olives join blueberries, dark chocolate and tree bark on the nose of Ott's 2017 Bandol Chateau Romassan. A Mourvèdre-dominated blend, this full-bodied wine is plush and supple, with a slightly creamy mid-palate and a velvety texture to the finish. I'd be surprised if this were long-lived by Bandol standards, but it provides plenty of pleasure now and probably will continue to do so up to a decade.

In 1896 Marcel Ott, a young graduate in agronomy engineering from Alsace, found an estate in Provence that inspired him to grow wine. Today, more than 120 years later, cousins Christian and Jean-François Ott dedicate their lives to their ancestor’s love for the site. The three estates: Château de Selle, Clos Mireille and Château Romassan, each have their own individual charm and personality. Domaine Ott estates are cultivated in a way that fully respects nature; the soil is nurtured without chemicals or intensive production techniques, using only organic fertilisers. In 2004 Champagne house Louis Roederer bought a controlling share in Domaine Ott.

The story behind the bottle shape

In the late 19th century, the wines of Provence were distributed in bulk and served in carafes. Marcel Ott, as a pioneer in Provence, had the idea to create a bottle “La Provençale" symbolising the wines of Provence. Originally his project concerned all the producers in the region but, faced with the cost and complexity of creating such a bottle, no one followed him. In the 1930s, Marcel Ott asked his son René to make a bottle for the Château de Selle. He invented a slender, fleshy and feminine form inspired by the Roman amphora. The model is registered and has become the signature of Domaines Ott.

“Three Estates, two appellations, one passion for wine.”
