Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC is a specific appellation within the Chianti Classico zone of Tuscany, Italy, dedicated to the production of traditional Tuscan dessert wine. This designation covers the same geographic area as Chianti Classico DOCG, encompassing parts of the provinces of Florence and Siena between the cities of Florence and Siena. The appellation represents a continuation of centuries-old winemaking traditions in this historic wine region.

The production of Vin Santo in this zone follows strict traditional methods that distinguish it from other sweet wines. Grapes, typically including Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia varieties, are harvested and then dried on mats or hung in well-ventilated rooms for several months to concentrate their sugars. The dried grapes are pressed and the resulting must ferments slowly in small wooden barrels called caratelli, often for three to six years. This extended aging process occurs without topping up the barrels, allowing for oxidative development that is characteristic of authentic Vin Santo.

Vin Santo del Chianti Classico exhibits the complex, concentrated character typical of passito wines made through grape desiccation. These wines typically display amber to deep golden colors with intense aromatics of dried fruits, nuts, honey, and often hints of caramel or toffee. The palate combines sweetness with balancing acidity, creating wines that can age for decades and develop increasing complexity over time.
