Tannat originated in the Basque regions of southwestern France, where it has been cultivated since at least the 18th century. The grape found its most famous expression in Madiran, where it produces deeply structured wines that require extended aging. In the 1870s, Basque immigrants brought Tannat cuttings to Uruguay, where the grape adapted remarkably well to the maritime climate and clay soils. Today, Uruguay has embraced Tannat as its signature red variety, with the grape covering more vineyard area there than in its native France.
Tannat produces wines with intense color, high tannin levels, and robust structure. The grape typically yields flavors of dark berries, plum, and black cherry, often accompanied by notes of tobacco, leather, and spice. Young Tannat wines can be quite austere due to their powerful tannin structure, but with proper aging they develop complexity and soften considerably. The grape's naturally high acidity and tannin content make it well-suited for extended cellaring, and many examples improve significantly over decades.
In Uruguay's Canelones region, Tannat often appears in blends with international varieties like Merlot, which helps soften its intense structure while maintaining the grape's characteristic depth. The wine pairs particularly well with grilled red meats, game, and aged cheeses, as the robust tannins complement rich, protein-heavy dishes. French expressions from Madiran tend to be more austere and require longer aging, while Uruguayan versions often show riper fruit character and more approachable tannins in their youth.
