The Pfalz, located in southwestern Germany along the Rhine River valley, ranks as the country's second-largest wine region by vineyard area. Stretching approximately 80 kilometers from the Rhine in the east to the Haardt Mountains in the west, the region extends from the French border northward to Rheinhessen. This positioning places it along the continuation of France's Alsace wine region, sharing similar geological foundations and benefiting from one of Germany's warmest and driest climates.

The region enjoys a continental climate moderated by the sheltering effect of the Vosges Mountains to the west, which block moisture-laden Atlantic weather systems. Annual rainfall averages around 500-600 millimeters, making it one of Germany's driest wine regions. The diverse soils include sandstone, limestone, clay, and loess deposits, with the eastern areas closer to the Rhine featuring more fertile alluvial soils. Two main sub-regions divide the Pfalz: the Südliche Weinstraße in the south and the Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße in the north, with the latter containing many of the region's most prestigious vineyards.

Riesling dominates plantings and represents the region's flagship variety, producing wines ranging from bone-dry to intensely sweet. The warm climate allows for reliable ripening and often results in Riesling with more body and lower acidity compared to cooler German regions like the Mosel.
