Carpano is an Italian vermouth producer based in Turin, in the Piedmont region. Founded in 1786, the house became synonymous with vermouth production and remains one of Italy's most established makers of fortified, aromatized wines. The company has maintained continuous operation for over two centuries, establishing itself as a significant figure in the broader category of Italian fortified wines.
Italian vermouth is made by infusing wine with botanicals—herbs, spices, roots, and other plant material—then fortifying the result with spirits. The category encompasses both dry and sweet expressions, with significant regional production centered in Turin and the broader Piedmont area. Carpano's approach involves lengthy maceration of botanical ingredients and careful blending to develop complexity and balance. The house produces both sweet and dry styles, reflecting the full spectrum of vermouth tradition.
The Carpano range includes Antica Formula, a well-established sweet vermouth formula, alongside Dry Vermouth and Punt e Mes. Punt e Mes is a distinctive style within the vermouth category—lower in residual sugar than conventional sweet vermouths but more bitter and herbaceous, with pronounced quinine characteristics. These products represent different stylistic approaches within the vermouth category, offering options for both aperitif and cocktail applications.
