The Gaja 2017 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn opens to a luminous ruby appearance with pretty crimson highlights. This vintage appears lighter in color and concentration compared to past editions. The bouquet delivers a purity and sharpness nonetheless, but it offers less overall fruit. It shows subtle berry tones with blue flower, aniseed and candied orange peel. This very young Sorì Tildìn takes time to open, and it remains on the nervous side even after it has been given ample time in the glass. The best course of action is to wait until the 10-year mark before opening this bottle. It needs that extra time to soften and flesh out.
Here's a wonderfully spicy and opulent rendition of Nebbiolo and another very full and rich Barbaresco from Gaja. The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is open, more concentrated and structured. There are pretty floral notes of rose hip or wild rose in this generous wine of broad scope. We're talking about smaller fruit here, with plums, cassis, blackberry and plenty of power. Everything came to perfect maturity in this 2016 vintage, representing that rare merge of quantity and quality. This is what you get from the dense soils of the warm, south-facing Sorì Tildìn site and similar ones where the terrain can keep the moisture locked in. The 2016 growing season was also marked by sharp diurnal shifts, and rainfall was well-timed to occur when it was needed most.

La famille Gaja s'est installée dans le Piémont au milieu du XVIIe siècle. Cinq générations de Gaja produisent des vins dans les collines des Langhe depuis 1989, année où Giovanni Gaja, un viticulteur local, a fondé le domaine viticole Gaja à Barbaresco.

Après des années de dévouement à une qualité sans compromis, les vins ont atteint une position de leader en Italie et la famille a été en mesure d'acheter des vignobles en acquérant Sorì Tildìn, Costa Russi, Sorì San Lorenzo et Darmagi.

Angelo Gaja a repris l'entreprise familiale en 1961 et a combiné son respect des traditions des Langhe avec des innovations audacieuses dans les vignobles et les caves qui ont changé la façon dont les vins étaient produits dans toute l'Italie.

Angelo vit à Barbaresco avec sa femme Lucia et leurs trois enfants, Gaia, Rossana et Giovanni, qui représentent la cinquième génération de la famille et sont tous impliqués dans l'entreprise.

Aujourd'hui, la cave possède 96 ha de vignobles à Barbaresco et Barolo. En 1994, les Gajas ont acquis leur premier domaine en Toscane, Pieve Santa Restituta à Montalcino. En 1996, la famille a acheté sa deuxième propriété toscane, Ca' Marcanda à Bogheri.

Il compte plus de DOCG (17) et de DOC (42) que toute autre région (voir les cartes : région d'Asti, Langhe, Monferrato et nord), mais aucune IGP. En 2016, le Piémont a produit 2,5 millions d'hectolitres (28,3 millions de caisses) de vin, dont la majorité (55 %) est rouge et 83 % de niveau DOP. Les principaux cépages de la région sont le Barbera (31 %), le Moscato (22 %), le Dolcetto (13 %) et le Nebbiolo (10 %).
