The 2017 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru has a very stern bouquet, quite distant at first, then gradually almost reluctantly unfurling with sea-influenced black fruit, hints of brine and oyster shell in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boded tannin, foursquare for a Bonnes Mares, eschewing flamboyance for something more noble. This is certainly a more Morey-inspired Bonnes Mares than Chambolle, but nevertheless is a very fine wine of considerable breeding.

Bruno Clair is a prominent Burgundian wine producer, respected for his role in establishing and maintaining high standards of quality in the wines of the region. Founded in 1979, Domaine Bruno Clair is based in Marsannay, and it has become synonymous with exceptional Burgundy wines, particularly known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

**Background and Development:**
Bruno Clair founded his domaine following the dissolution of the family domaine, Clair-Daü, which was once a respected name in Burgundy. Starting with vineyards from family holdings, particularly in Marsannay and Fixin, Bruno Clair quickly expanded, acquiring parcels in some of Burgundy's most prestigious appellations, including Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, and Corton.

**Vineyards and Terroir:**
Domaine Bruno Clair owns vineyards across multiple Burgundian crus, including coveted plots in Clos de Bèze and Clos Saint-Jacques in Gevrey-Chambertin. The domaine is particularly noted for its holdings in the lesser-known appellation of Marsannay, which has risen in stature partly due to Clair’s efforts. His vineyards are managed with sustainable practices, emphasizing organic methods, although not officially certified.

**Winemaking Philosophy:**
Bruno Clair’s approach to winemaking is defined by minimal intervention. The goal is to let the terroir express itself, hence, fermentation occurs with natural yeasts, and the wines are aged in oak barrels with a careful consideration of the use of new oak to avoid overshadowing the purity of the fruit. Clair's wines are known for their clarity, precision, and ability to age gracefully.

**Wine Style and Characteristics:**
The wines of Domaine Bruno Clair are highly esteemed for their balance, depth, and complexity. The reds are structured yet elegant, showcasing the typical red and black fruit flavors of Pinot Noir, accented with earthy, spicy notes. The whites are equally praised, particularly the Chardonnays from Corton-Charlemagne, which display richness, minerality, and vibrant acidity.

**Reputation:**
Bruno Clair is regarded as a meticulous and thoughtful vintner, with wines that reflect his deep understanding of Burgundy’s diverse terroirs. His influence extends beyond his own wines, as he has been a mentor to younger generations of winemakers in Burgundy. The wines are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts around the world, celebrated for their authenticity and craftsmanship.

Overall, Domaine Bruno Clair continues to be a benchmark for quality in Burgundy, with Bruno Clair himself an emblematic figure in the preservation and innovation of Burgundian winemaking traditions.

Le chardonnay est le premier cépage des vins blancs de Bourgogne, avec 48 % de l'encépagement et 68 % de la production. Le chardonnay apprécie le sol marneux de la Bourgogne, qui lui confère de délicats arômes floraux, fruités et minéraux, ainsi que des saveurs corsées. L'aligoté est le deuxième cépage blanc, avec 6 % de la production. {En savoir plus sur l'ancien cépage aligoté en Bourgogne.}

Bonnes Mares is a highly sought-after wine producer located in the Burgundy region of France. The vineyard is situated in the Côte de Nuits area, which is known for producing some of the finest Pinot Noir wines in the world. The name Bonnes Mares is derived from the French words "bonnes" meaning good and "mares" meaning land, which is a testament to the quality of the soil in this region.

The history of Bonnes Mares dates back to the 16th century when the vineyard was owned by the Cistercian monks. The vineyard changed hands several times over the centuries, and it wasn't until the 20th century that it gained recognition as one of the top wine producers in Burgundy. Today, Bonnes Mares is owned by a group of investors who are committed to preserving the vineyard's rich history and producing exceptional wines.

The style of production at Bonnes Mares is traditional and focused on quality. The vineyard is managed using sustainable farming practices, and the grapes are handpicked and sorted to ensure only the best fruit is used in the winemaking process. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for up to 18 months, which imparts a subtle oak flavor and enhances the wine's complexity.

Bonnes Mares produces both red and white wines, but it is best known for its Pinot Noir. The Pinot Noir grapes grown in this region are known for their intense flavor and aroma, which are a result of the unique terroir of the Côte de Nuits. The wine is medium-bodied with a deep ruby color and a complex bouquet of red fruit, earthy notes, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is rich and velvety with a long, smooth finish.

In addition to its Pinot Noir, Bonnes Mares also produces a small amount of Chardonnay. The Chardonnay grapes grown in this region are known for their minerality and acidity, which give the wine a crisp, refreshing taste. The wine is aged in oak barrels, which adds a subtle vanilla flavor and enhances the wine's complexity.

Overall, Bonnes Mares is a top-tier wine producer that is known for its exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vineyard's rich history, traditional style of production, and commitment to quality make it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts.
