Tenuta delle Terre Nere is a Sicilian wine producer based on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, operating within the Etna DOC appellation. The estate focuses exclusively on wines made from indigenous grape varieties that have adapted to the unique terroir of this active volcanic region.

Mount Etna's volcanic soils, composed primarily of pumice, ash, and lava rock, create distinctive growing conditions that impart mineral complexity to the wines. The region's high altitude vineyards, ranging from 600 to 1000 meters above sea level, benefit from significant diurnal temperature variation and the cooling influence of elevation, allowing grapes to retain acidity while developing flavor concentration. Etna DOC has gained recognition for producing some of Sicily's most elegant and age-worthy wines.

The estate works with Nerello Mascalese for their red wines and Carricante for whites, both native varieties that express the volcanic character of the region. Their current range includes San Lorenzo Etna Rosso, made from Nerello Mascalese, and San Spirito Etna Bianco, crafted from Carricante grapes.

The defining characteristic of Etna is its volcanic terroir. Vineyards are planted on dark, mineral-rich lava soils that drain efficiently and retain heat, creating distinct microclimates at different altitudes. Elevation significantly influences wine style—higher vineyards produce more delicate, mineral-driven wines, while lower sites yield riper, more structured examples. The appellation permits two primary red varieties (Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio) and two white varieties (Carricante and Catarratto), though Nerello Mascalese dominates red production and Carricante has become increasingly prominent in whites.
