One of the most renowned wine producers in the world, Château Margaux is located in the prestigious Margaux appellation within the Bordeaux region of France. This historic estate has been producing exceptional wines for over 400 years and is considered a benchmark for quality and excellence in winemaking.
Château Margaux is situated on the left bank of the Gironde River, in the southern part of the Médoc region. The estate covers over 260 hectares, with 87 hectares dedicated to the production of red wine. The vineyards are planted with mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. The unique terroir of the Margaux appellation, with its gravelly soils and ideal microclimate, provides the perfect conditions for producing world-class wines.
The history of Château Margaux dates back to the 12th century when it was known as "La Mothe de Margaux." In the 16th century, the estate was acquired by the Lestonnac family, who were responsible for planting the first vineyards. It wasn't until the 17th century when the estate was purchased by the Lestonnac's descendants, the de Lestonnac family, that Château Margaux began to gain recognition for its exceptional wines.
In the 18th century, the estate was acquired by the Marquis de la Colonilla, who gave the estate its current name, Château Margaux. It was during this period that the estate's reputation grew, and the wines of Château Margaux became highly sought after by royalty and nobility. The estate was classified as a First Growth in the famous 1855 Bordeaux Classification, solidifying its status as one of the top wine producers in the world.
Today, Château Margaux is owned by the Mentzelopoulos family, who purchased the estate in 1977 and have continued to uphold the legacy of
