Tasting Notes

Opening to an inky dark appearance, you feel the heat and concentration of a hot vintage. The Luciano Sandrone 2022 Barbera d'Alba opens to heavy and ripe aromas of breakfast prune, baked plum and raisin. This tonneaux-aged wine leans toward overripe aromas, leaving primary freshness in the rearview mirror. Production is 25,000 bottles.

Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading producers in Barolo. Although he makes wines in quite a modern style, it would be unfair to characterize him simply as a modernizer: while his wines, which see around 10% new oak, are made in a style that makes them easy to appreciate in their youth, they still possess plenty of structure and power that makes them good candidates for long ageing. He’s a traditionalist in part, modernizer in part!

Sandrone began in 1978 and now has a production level that runs to some 8000 cases annually from his 22 hectares of vineyards.

In the wine world, Piemonte is best known for the twin titans of Barolo and Barbaresco, along with other popular red wines made from Barbera and Dolcetto, the white Gavi, and sparkling Asti.

It has more DOCGs (17) and DOCs (42) than any other region (see maps: Asti area, Langhe, Monferrato, and northern), but no IGPs. In 2016, Piemonte produced 2.5 million hl (28.3 million cases) of wine, the majority of it (55%) red and 83% at the DOP level. The region’s primary grape varieties are Barbera (31%), Moscato (22%), Dolcetto (13%), and Nebbiolo (10%).
