Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc originated in the Loire Valley of France, where it has been cultivated since at least the 9th century. The grape thrives in cool climates with sufficient sunshine, conditions the Loire provides along its temperate river valley. Beyond its French homeland, Chenin Blanc has established itself in South Africa, where it became one of the country's most planted white varieties and has gained recognition for quality expressions over recent decades.

The grape produces wines of considerable versatility, ranging from bone-dry to intensely sweet depending on harvest timing and winemaking approach. Aromatically, Chenin Blanc typically expresses green apple, quince, and floral notes, with honeyed and mineral characteristics emerging in riper or aged examples. The variety naturally possesses good acidity and can develop complex textural depth, making it suitable for still wines, sparkling formats, and botrytis-affected sweet wines. Its structure allows for meaningful aging potential, particularly in drier expressions.

In the Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc reaches its finest expressions in appellations such as Vouvray, Savennières, and Coteaux du Layon, where the interplay of terroir and the grape's inherent characteristics create distinctive regional styles. Dry Chenin Blancs pair well with shellfish, poultry, and vegetable-based dishes, while sweeter versions complement desserts, blue cheese, and foie gras. South African producers have developed their own interpretation of the variety, often producing fresher, fruit-forward styles suited to warmer climate viticulture.
