Tasting notes

A rush of corn and banana upfront that’s followed by sugary blend of vanilla and walnut. Minor traces of smoke, cinnamon, and maple creep in and help add some additional nuance. Although its thin mouthfeel is regrettable and 80 proof unappealing, it thankfully drinks ever so slightly hotter. This all adds up to a palate that is distinctly Jack and makes it surprisingly fun to drink.

About this whisky

Jack Daniels is a world-renowned producer of Tennessee whiskey, with a rich history dating back to 1866. The brand was founded by Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel, who began distilling whiskey at the age of 13. Jack Daniels is known for its unique charcoal mellowing process, which gives the whiskey its distinctive smoothness and flavour.

The production of Jack Daniels whiskey begins with the selection of high-quality grains, including corn, rye, and barley. These grains are ground into a fine meal and mixed with pure, iron-free water from the nearby Cave Spring Hollow. The resulting mash is then fermented with a proprietary yeast strain, which is carefully cultivated to produce the desired flavour profile.

After fermentation, the mash is distilled in copper stills to produce a clear, high-proof spirit. This spirit is then filtered through sugar maple charcoal, a process known as the Lincoln County Process, which removes impurities and imparts a unique flavour to the whiskey. The filtered spirit is then aged in new, charred oak barrels for a minimum of four years, during which time it develops its rich colour and complex flavour.

Jack Daniels produces a range of whiskeys, including its flagship Old No. 7 brand, which is a classic Tennessee whiskey with a smooth, sweet flavour and a hint of smokiness. The brand also produces a range of flavoured whiskeys, including Honey, Fire, and Apple, which are popular with younger drinkers and those looking for a sweeter, more approachable whiskey.

In addition to its whiskey, Jack Daniels also produces a range of other spirits, including Tennessee Honey, a blend of Jack Daniels whiskey and honey liqueur, and Gentleman Jack, a premium whiskey that is twice charcoal mellowed for extra smoothness. The brand also produces a range of limited edition whiskeys, including Single Barrel Select, which is hand-selected by the master distiller and bottled at cask strength for a unique, full-bodied flavour.

Overall, Jack Daniels is a brand with a rich history and a commitment to quality and innovation. Its unique charcoal mellowing process and range of flavoured whiskeys have made it a favourite among whiskey drinkers around the world.
