The Echezeaux Grand Cru is quite promising, offering up aromas of minty berry fruit, embers, warm spices, and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich, and fleshy, with ripe tannins and a lusty, oak-inflected finish, it's quite marked by its élevage but typically tends to come around by the time it's bottled.
The 2017 Echezeaux Grand has rounded out nicely with further élevage and performed well from bottle. Mingling aromas of raspberries and cassis with hints of grilled squab and toasty new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, succulent, and fleshy, built around powdery tannins and concluding with good length on the finish.
The 2016 Echezeaux Grand Cru is one weak link in the range this year, which could simply be a victim of the frost damage. While the wine displays an attractive bouquet of red cherries, spices and herbs, its medium-bodied palate is somewhat tart and meagre, with edgy acids and light but chewy structuring tannins.
The 2015 Echezeaux Grand Cru opens in the glass with a bouquet of cassis and plums with a generous framing of spicy new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample, and fine-grained, with the atypical concentration and depth at the core so characteristic of the 2015 vintage, and a surprisingly bright line of acidity which verges on the tart.
The 2014 Echezeaux Grand Cru has a respectable clean and fresh bouquet with Morello cherry, raspberry coulis and touches of undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with finer tannin than either the Chambertin or Romanée Saint Vivant. There is a sense of energy here with just the right amount of spice towards the finish. One of the better offerings this vintage from Louis Latour, enjoy this over the next decade.
The Echézeaux Grand Cru has a very pure bouquet with macerated small red cherries, kirsch, hints of vanilla and wild heather. It has the panache that you seek from this vineyard and the oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity and fine balance. This is a stylish Echézeaux that feels long and tender on the finish, with fine tension and precision.
