Raised entirely in new oak with all its stems, the 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru has a tough job following the crystalline Les Amoureuses. Almost opaque at first, this whole bunch imparts a strong pepperiness, with a light charcoal scent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, taut and fresh with a slightly chalky textured, sorbet-fresh finish.
From the first nose, it bears the mark of the greats, racy, complex and generous. It seduces with its intense aromas of black fruits enhanced with spices, its sophisticated floral fragrances and its most appetizing underlying mineral framework. The palate also shows a lot of concentration while retaining the finesse and elegance of the greatest. It offers dense, fine and juicy tannins. Its flesh combines sensuality and energy. The particularly fresh and mineral finish is endless.
The Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is 100% whole bunch and was matured entirely in new oak. It has a delightful bouquet with cranberry and wild strawberry aromas, fine delineation with the new oak neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of confit fruit on the entry. It is very well balanced with bright red berry fruit at its heart, a silver bead of acidity and great precision towards the finish that fans out with intention. This is a long-term prospect since it conveys great substance and offers superb salinity on the finish. Excellent.

Nicolas Groffier, represents the fourth generation. The plots he cultivates are all on the Côte de Nuits, in the great terroirs of Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. A small estate that produces very great red Burgundy wines, in particular the Bonnes Mares grand cru.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.
