The 2017 Roc de Cambes is deep garnet-purple in color with a slightly reticent nose of blackberries, cassis and tar with nuances of pencil shavings, damp soil and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, firm and grainy with great freshness and a long, lively finish.
The 2016 Roc de Cambes has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with rich aromas of cassis and cherries mingled with a rich patina of dark chocolate, spices and cigar wrapper. Full-bodied, deep and muscular, its ample, concentrated core is framed by powdery tannins and impressively lively acids. While it's unavoidably marked by its time in 100% new wood, it's the best integrated "great" vintage of Roc de Cambes I can remember tasting at such an early stage. Include it in a blind tasting a decade from now and watch it slay plenty of heavyweight Right Bank names.
The 2014 Roc de Cambes has a lovely bouquet -very pure and intense -with black cherries, blueberry fruit and crushed rose petal that develops with time. The palate is medium-bodied, with fleshy ripe red and black fruit, supple tannin, hints of orange zest and pomegranate and quite a structured finish that just cuts away a little swiftly on the aftertaste.
Deep garnet colored, the 2010 Roc de Cambes opens with leather and animal notions over a core of baked plums and Black Forest cake plus suggestions of bouquet garni and tilled soil. Full-bodied, the palate is solidly constructed with firm, chewy tannins and loads of freshness supporting the generous black fruit preserves, finishing on a compelling earthy/meaty note.
The nose is fresh, elegant, deep, complex, with freshness, especially on the spicy side, and reveals some candied character, a fine intensity (in depth), a certain brilliance and roundness. There are notes of ripe/fresh blackberry, violet and more lightly coffee combined with hints of bright red berry/berry fruit as well as hints of toast, camphor, and a discreet hint of star anise.
The palate is nicely mineral, fresh, elegant, pleasing and reveals a bright/flashy side to the fruit, gourmandise, tension, lovely elegance, good definition, precision, and complexity. On the palate this wine expresses pulpy/flavoured cherry, blackberry and slightly blackcurrant notes combined with fine touches of plum blossom, roast and a subtle hint of toast, cardamom, and vanilla bean. The tannins are smooth, racy, and elegant. Subtle chewiness on the finish/persistence.
