The NV Brut Grand Siècle #15 is showing magically today, wafting from the glass with scents of orange oil, exotic fruit, smoke, clear honey, toasted bread, iodine and coniferous forest floor. Full-bodied, ample and complete, with terrific concentration, racy acids and a pearly mousse, it's deep and complex, with a satiny attack and an intensely sapid, umami-laden finish. Tasted from magnum, the #15 is a blend of the 1990, 1988 and 1985 vintages. Fauconnet describes 1990 as "the Chardonnay vintage," 1988 as a source of underlying "austerity," and 1985 as "the year for Pinot, which I kept for five years, waiting for the Chardonnay!"
