Domaine Humbert Freres is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the Burgundy region in France. The winery was founded in 1952 by brothers Jean and Michel Humbert, who inherited the winemaking tradition from their father Marcel Humbert. Today, the winery is run by the third generation of the Humbert family, with brothers Benoit and Frederic Humbert at the helm.

The winery is situated in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, which is known for producing some of the finest red wines in the world. The winery's vineyards cover a total of 18 hectares, with 16 hectares dedicated to Pinot Noir and 2 hectares to Chardonnay. The winery follows sustainable viticulture practices, with a focus on preserving the terroir and producing high-quality, authentic wines.

The wines of Domaine Humbert Freres are classified as AOC Gevrey-Chambertin, which is a prestigious appellation in the Burgundy region. This appellation is known for producing powerful, complex and age-worthy wines, and the wines from Domaine Humbert Freres are no exception. The winery produces a range of red and white wines, with their Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru "Les Cazetiers" being the flagship wine of the estate.

The winemaking process at Domaine Humbert Freres is a combination of traditional and modern techniques. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before being gently pressed. The red wines are fermented in open wooden vats, while the white wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels, with a proportion of new barrels each year to add complexity and structure to the wines.

The wines of Domaine Humbert Freres have gained critical acclaim over the years, with their Premier Cru "Les Cazetiers" consistently receiving high ratings from renowned wine critics

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

Gevrey-Chambertin is a village appellation in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, located in northeastern France. The commune encompasses both village-level wines and Premier Cru designations, which represent specific vineyard sites within the appellation. The village gained its hyphenated name in the 19th century by adding "Chambertin" — one of its most prestigious vineyard parcels — to its original name of Gevrey.

The appellation's vineyards sit on east-facing slopes with a limestone-rich substrate typical of the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin produces exclusively Pinot Noir under Burgundian regulations, with winemaking focused on expressing the subtle variations between individual vineyard sites rather than blending across large areas. The region's continental climate, with morning sun exposure and afternoon protection, creates conditions suited to Pinot Noir's ripening requirements.

Gevrey-Chambertin wines are characterized by black cherry and dark red fruit aromatics, often with earthy undertones and spice notes that develop with bottle age. The wines typically display moderate to firm tannin structure and acidity that supports aging potential. Premier Cru bottlings from the appellation show greater complexity and concentration than village-level examples, with individual vineyard expressions influenced by subtle variations in slope exposure and soil composition.
