Henri-Boillot is a renowned wine producer based in the Burgundy region of France. Today, the estate is run by Henri's grandson, Guillaume Boillot, who has continued the family tradition of producing exceptional wines.

The estate owns vineyards in some of the most prestigious appellations in Burgundy, including Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, and Chassagne-Montrachet. Henri-Boillot is best known for its white wines, which are considered some of the finest in Burgundy. The estate produces a range of white wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Aligoté. The wines are fermented and aged in oak barrels, which gives them a rich, complex flavour profile. The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

Echezeaux is a wine appellation located in the heart of Burgundy, France. It is known for producing some of the finest red wines in the world, made from Pinot Noir grapes. The appellation covers an area of approximately 37 hectares and is divided into 11 different climats, each with its own unique terroir.

The history of Echezeaux dates back to the 13th century when the Cistercian monks first planted vines in the area. Over the centuries, the vineyards were passed down through various noble families until they were eventually acquired by the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in the 19th century. Today, Echezeaux is still owned by the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and is considered one of the most prestigious wine appellations in the world.

The style of production in Echezeaux is traditional and focused on quality. The vineyards are carefully tended by hand, with strict attention paid to pruning, canopy management, and soil health. The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted rigorously to ensure only the best fruit is used in the winemaking process.

The Pinot Noir grapes grown in Echezeaux are known for their complexity and depth of flavor. They are typically small and tightly packed, with thick skins that contribute to the wine's rich color and tannic structure. The wines produced in Echezeaux are known for their elegance, balance, and longevity. They are often described as having aromas of red fruit, earth, and spice, with a silky texture and a long, lingering finish.

There are several different wines produced in Echezeaux, each with its own unique character. The most famous is the Grand Cru Echezeaux, which is made from grapes grown in the climats of Les Poulaillères, Les Champs Traversins, Les Cruots ou Vignes Blanches, Les Beaux Monts, Les Rouges du Bas, Les Quartiers de Nuits, and Les Loachausses. This wine is known for its power and complexity, with flavors of black fruit, leather, and tobacco.

Other wines produced in Echezeaux include the Premier Cru Echezeaux, which is made from grapes grown in the climats of Les Poulaillères, Les Champs Traversins, and Les Cruots ou Vignes Blanches. This wine is slightly lighter in style than the Grand Cru, with flavors of red fruit, spice, and earth.

Overall, Echezeaux is a wine appellation that is steeped in history and tradition. Its wines are some of the finest in the world, and are sought after by collectors and connoisseurs alike. If you are looking for a wine that is elegant, complex, and full of character, then Echezeaux is definitely worth exploring.
