The Jim Beam Distillery dynasty was founded when a group of immigrants from the German Boeham family emigrated to America, americanising their name to BEAM and settling in the hills of Kentucky. 1770 - 1834 Johannes 'Jacob' Beam began distilling and in 1795 he was followed by his sons, who became famous whisky makers. J H Beam founded the Early Times Distillery and David M Beam succeeded his father at his Old Tub Distillery. James Beauregard 'Jim' Beam was one of David's three children.

Prohibition closed the distillery but after repeal in 1933 the James B Beam Distillery Company was formed. Although the company has changed through hands many times, the Beam family have remained with Frederick Booker Now III now representing the seventh generation which is illustrated on the side label of the bottle.
