”The 2011 Kai is named for a word in the Mapuche language meaning -plant,- as the winery wanted to show the original varietal from Chile. This is a premium Carmenere with 5% Petit Verdot from their oldest vineyards (planted 1994) in Aconcagua. (I wonder why it took so long to realize that the leaves of Carmenere turn red, so they are completely different to Merlot.) In 2011, it was harvested very late, end of April and May, searching for a slow maturation, as the idea is to keep the Carmenere character without becoming too green. The wine aged in French oak (90%) for 22 months. A beautiful bright ruby, it offers a clean nose of ripe red fruits, figs, some balsamic notes, sensual herbaceous hints, slightly roasted tobacco and smoky notes. It has low-ish acidity and feels round, with no edges. Together with some floral flavors, and silky tannins, it is highly drinkable. 700 cases of this superb Carmenere were produced. Drink 2015-2020." Luis Gutiérrez

”The 2010 Kai is the purest Carmenere to date (96%) and the first to employ 90% new oak instead of 100%. It has ripe vanilla-y oak on the nose, but good delineation with layers of primal plum and cassis fruit. The palate is sweet and grippy on the entry with powerful black fruit laced with dark chocolate and a touch of mint. There is good weight and greater symmetry than the 2009. The finish has fine tension: reserved and masculine. Excellent. Drink now-2018.“ Luis Gutiérrez

”There are only 700 cases of the 2008 Kai Carmenere (which contains 5% Syrah and 3% Petit Verdot in its blend). It too displays a touch of herbs along with exotic spices, incense, black cherry, and blueberry. Rich and velvety-textured, it has enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years at which point it may exhibit greater complexity” Luis Gutiérrez

In the last few years, Errazuriz has been recognised as perhaps the single top quality producer of Chilean wines. Its wines were either the top-rated or shared the top rating in the last major Chilean reviews from the Wine Spectator, the Wine Advocate, and Tanzer.

As an estate winery, Viña Errazuriz strives to produce the finest wines by controlling every stage of the winemaking process, from grape growing in the Aconcagua, Casablanca and Curico valleys, to winemaking with the most natural techniques. An emphasis is placed on the delicate handling of the wines, with the aim of producing wines with elegance and complexity. It is this dynamism and passion for wine that has made Errazuriz such an internationally respected producer of quality wines.

Few have done more to promote Chilean wine than Eduardo Chadwick, most notably with his blind comparisons with First Growths. In my opinion, what this estate will produce in the next twenty years will completely surpass the previous twenty years.” Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
