    Located in the heart of the Gigondas appellation, Château de Saint Cosme is a historic domain that has been in the hands of Louis Barruol’s family since 1570. Using ancient techniques passed down through generations, as well as modern practices of organic farming and biodiversity to produce touchstone wines of the region. The 15 hectare estate is located on top of two crossing geological fault lines, resulting in an amazing diversity of soil. By isolating specific plots Château de Sainte Cosme is able to create wines with great variety, even though the plots are next to each other and the same wine making techniques are used.

    You are the 14th generation to work Château de Saint Cosme, what is the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt from your ancestors? It is really hard, almost impossible to tell only one lesson more valuable than another. To try to answer you the best way, the most relevant thing I can say is that the rocks, the soils and vineyards are nothing without the work of the people.

    There is a chapel located in the heart of the property, have you found any treasures around the vineyards? Saint Cosme has welcomed a lot of different civilizations because of its strategic position, sheltered by the Dentelles of Montmirailles and near a river. We have numerous prints from the Celts and the Gallo-romans proving they were already making wine here in their time. We have Gallo-Roman fermentation tanks hewn into the rock from the 2nd and 3rd century in our winery.

    What do you aim to transmit with your wines?The terroirs of Saint-Cosme are composed of a geological mosaic brought about by the upheaval of the Dentelles of Montmirail and a cool microclimate for the area. We make our wines with the aim to reveal the terroir the best we can using the winemaking techniques that fit our wines. We truly believe in continuity and make wines that show pure, precise sense of place, wines that have personality and balance. We also want them to have the propensity to age.
