Here is a red blend so exquisitely balanced and presented you just can't help yourself but pour yourself another glass. Taking inspiration from the great wines of Bordeaux this blend is primarily made of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with splashes of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The palate reveals juicy, dark fruit sweetness, fine tannins and generous length.
Founded in 1970 by three brothers – David, Mark and Giles Hohnen – Cape Mentelle was one of the first estates to be established on the eponymous Cape, just a few miles from the town of Margaret River. This small yet prestigious winemaking region, nestled in the far southwest corner of Australia, on the shores of the Indian Ocean, is considered to be one of the most isolated in the world.
Cape Mentelle began production with only 16 hectares of vineyards and has now expanded to 150. The estate enjoys a mild and humid maritime climate, plus a long, dry growing season that helps the grapes to ripen. With exceptional know-how and meticulous attention to the expression of terroir and grape quality, the Cape Mentelle wine portfolio includes different varieties: merlot, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, shiraz, zinfandel and cabernet franc.
But it is the cabernet sauvignon that remains the estate’s leading light. It has twice received the most coveted award in Australia, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy. In 2014, the sixth edition of the prestigious Langton’s Classification of Australian Wines saw Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon elevated from ‘Excellent’ to ‘Outstanding’.
