Angostura was originally a cure for tropical fevers! Its creator, Dr. Siegert, landed in Venezuela in 1820 as surgeon-in-chief of the armies of Simon Bolivar, sought indeed to fight against this plague that decimated the troops. Gradually, its exceptional aromatic qualities diverted it from its medicinal use and, at the death of Dr. Siegert, in 1870, the liquor, renamed Angostura and now produced in Trinidad, already had an international reputation. Even today, it remains the essential aromatic complement of many cocktails and recipes.
