Glera

Glera is a white grape variety native to northeastern Italy, specifically the Veneto region, where it has been cultivated for centuries. The variety was officially renamed from Prosecco to Glera in 2009 to distinguish the grape from the wine region and appellation of the same name. It thrives in the hillside vineyards of the Prosecco-producing zones, where the combination of altitude, limestone-rich soils, and continental climate creates ideal conditions for the development of the grape's characteristic aromatics and balanced acidity.

Glera produces light, refreshing white wines typically vinified as sparkling wines using the Charmat method, which preserves the grape's delicate fruit character. The wines are marked by crisp acidity, subtle stone fruit and citrus notes, and often display floral aromatics. Body is typically light to medium, with gentle carbonation that enhances the wine's liveliness. The base wine itself is relatively neutral and dry, but residual sugar is often retained to create the soft, approachable profile characteristic of commercial Prosecco styles.

The grape is almost exclusively grown in the Prosecco DOC and DOCG zones of Veneto and the adjacent areas of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where it is the primary or sole permitted grape variety. Glera-based sparkling wines range from bone-dry (Brut) to sweeter styles, making them versatile aperitifs. Their bright acidity and modest alcohol content pair well with light appetizers, seafood, and brunch fare, though they are frequently enjoyed on their own as a casual sparkling wine.
