The 2021 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru has an earthier bouquet with touches of wild mint percolating through the transparent red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins, velvety smooth, moderate depth though not a complex finish. Yet it is surfeit with charm and like the Echézeaux, will not need an enormous amount of cellaring.

Anne Gros is a highly respected winemaker in the Burgundy region of France, known particularly for her vineyard holdings in Vosne-Romanée, a commune that is home to some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world. Taking over her family's domain in 1988, Anne has established herself as one of the leading figures in Burgundy, known for her meticulous attention to detail and the high quality of her wines.

**Background and Approach:**
Anne Gros took charge of Domaine François Gros, her family's estate, and through a series of acquisitions and expansions, focused on elevating the quality and reputation of the domaine. Under her leadership, the domaine was renamed Domaine Anne Gros. She is known for her philosophical approach to winemaking, which emphasizes minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the winery. This approach allows the character of the terroir and the vintage to shine through in her wines.

**Vineyard Holdings:**
Anne Gros’s vineyards include prized parcels in some of Vosne-Romanée's top grand cru sites, such as Richebourg and Clos Vougeot. She also owns vines in other notable areas like Chambolle-Musigny. Her holdings are relatively small, which allows for detailed, hands-on vineyard management, critical to producing premium wines in Burgundy.

**Winemaking Techniques:**
Anne Gros utilizes traditional Burgundian winemaking practices, including hand-picking of grapes, natural yeast fermentations, and aging in French oak barrels, where the use of new oak is carefully managed to ensure it does not overpower the purity of the fruit. Her wines are known for their elegance, depth, and complexity.

**Wines and Style:**
The wines of Anne Gros are highly sought after for their intensity, finesse, and precision. They typically display a beautiful balance of ripe fruit, structured tannins, and vibrant acidity, which are hallmarks of top-tier Burgundy. The red wines, primarily made from Pinot Noir, are noted for their silky texture and aromatic complexity, while her limited production of white wines, from Chardonnay, shows purity and minerality.

**Reputation:**
Anne Gros is considered a benchmark producer in Vosne-Romanée, with her wines consistently receiving critical acclaim and attracting attention from collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. Her commitment to expressing the individuality of each vineyard plot has helped to maintain the high standards and traditions of Burgundian winemaking, making her wines emblematic of the region's potential.

Lo Chardonnay è l'uva principale per i vini bianchi della Borgogna, con il 48% dei vitigni e il 68% della produzione. Lo Chardonnay apprezza il terreno marnoso della Borgogna, che gli conferisce delicati aromi floreali, fruttati e minerali e sapori corposi. L'Aligoté è la seconda uva bianca, con il 6% di produzione. {Per saperne di più sull'antica uva Aligoté in Borgogna.}

Clos de Vougeot, also known as Clos Vougeot, is one of the most famous and emblematic vineyards in the Burgundy wine region of France, particularly within the Côte de Nuits area. This Grand Cru vineyard is steeped in history, with origins dating back to the 12th century when Cistercian monks first began cultivating grapes here.

**Location and Terroir:**
Clos de Vougeot is located in the village of Vougeot, between the towns of Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée. The vineyard covers approximately 50 hectares (about 124 acres), making it the largest single vineyard in Côte de Nuits designated as Grand Cru. The terroir varies significantly across the vineyard due to its size and slight variations in slope and aspect, which results in a range of wine styles from the various producers who own parcels here.

The soil in Clos de Vougeot is predominantly limestone mixed with marl, lending a distinct mineral quality to the wines. The best plots are generally considered to be those located higher up on the slope, where the soil is thinner and the limestone bedrock is closer to the surface.

**Wine Characteristics:**
Clos de Vougeot is exclusively red wine, made from Pinot Noir. The wines from this Grand Cru are known for their robust structure, deep complexity, and potential for aging. They typically exhibit flavors of red and black cherries, earth, and spices, with a firm tannic backbone and high acidity that can evolve gracefully over many years.

**Viticulture and Winemaking:**
Over 80 different owners hold parcels within Clos de Vougeot, leading to considerable diversity in winemaking approaches. Traditional methods, such as hand harvesting, natural fermentations, and aging in French oak barrels, are common, although specifics such as the proportion of new oak and the duration of aging vary by producer.

**Historical Significance:**
The iconic Château de Clos de Vougeot, situated within the vineyard, houses the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, an influential wine society dedicated to promoting Burgundy. The château and its walls, which still enclose the vineyard, were built by the Cistercian monks and are a landmark of Burgundy's winemaking heritage.

**Modern Recognition:**
Despite the variability in style due to the different winemaking techniques and precise plot locations, Clos de Vougeot maintains a reputation as one of Burgundy's most prestigious and sought-after wines. It embodies the complexity and elegance that Burgundy wines are renowned for and continues to be a cornerstone of the region’s viticultural identity.
