The 2017 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru wafts from the glass with a complex bouquet of cherries, raspberries, forest floor, warm spices and a deft application of cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep and concentrated core of fruit, framed by racy acids and powdery tannins. The finish is long and penetrating. Unusually approachable for a Gaunoux Renardes, this is nonetheless constructed for a long and rewarding life.
One of the highlights of this tasting was the 2013 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that bursts from the glass with a surprisingly expressive bouquet of wild berries, plums and spices, complemented by savory bass notes of dark chocolate, game bird and dried ceps. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with terrific concentration, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. The combination of ultra-refined tannins and mouthwatering cut makes for a very elegant style of Corton-Renardes this year, and it will delight Burgundy purists.

Michel Gaunoux is a distinguished wine producer based in Pommard, within the Burgundy region of France. The domaine, known for its traditional approach to winemaking, has been highly respected for many decades, producing some of the most classic and well-regarded expressions of Pinot Noir from the area.

**Background and Philosophy:**
The Gaunoux family has a long history in Burgundian viticulture, and Michel Gaunoux’s estate is noted for its steadfast dedication to traditional winemaking methods. The philosophy here is deeply rooted in the expression of terroir, with a minimal intervention approach in both the vineyard and the cellar. This ensures that the wines genuinely reflect the character of their vineyard origins.

**Vineyard Holdings:**
Domaine Michel Gaunoux holds impressive parcels in the Côte de Beaune, including esteemed Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards in Pommard and Corton. The estate is particularly noted for its holdings in Pommard, such as the Premier Crus "Les Rugiens" and "Les Grands Epenots," which are known for producing robust and structured wines.

**Winemaking Techniques:**
The winemaking at Domaine Michel Gaunoux is meticulously precise, with a focus on purity and longevity. The grapes are harvested manually, and sorting is rigorous, ensuring only the best fruit is used. Fermentation is carried out using natural yeasts, and the wine is aged in French oak barrels, with a careful selection to avoid overt oak flavors. The wines are typically bottled without filtration, adhering to the philosophy that less manipulation results in a more authentic expression of the wine.

**Wine Style and Characteristics:**
Wines from Domaine Michel Gaunoux are known for their intensity, complexity, and capacity to age. They are quintessentially Burgundian, showcasing the delicate balance between power and elegance that is characteristic of the region’s best Pinot Noirs. The Pommard wines, in particular, are celebrated for their deep color, rich texture, and aromatic complexity, often with notes of dark cherries, earth, and spices.

**Reputation and Legacy:**
Michel Gaunoux’s wines are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate their traditional style and aging potential. The domaine has maintained a low profile, focusing on quality and consistency rather than commercial expansion. This commitment to excellence has cemented its reputation as a producer of some of the most authentic and esteemed wines in Burgundy.

In summary, Domaine Michel Gaunoux is a bastion of traditional Burgundian winemaking, with a legacy of producing profound and age-worthy wines that are a testament to the unique terroirs of Pommard and Corton.

Le chardonnay est le premier cépage des vins blancs de Bourgogne, avec 48 % de l'encépagement et 68 % de la production. Le chardonnay apprécie le sol marneux de la Bourgogne, qui lui confère de délicats arômes floraux, fruités et minéraux, ainsi que des saveurs corsées. L'aligoté est le deuxième cépage blanc, avec 6 % de la production. {En savoir plus sur l'ancien cépage aligoté en Bourgogne.}
