Riesling originated in the Rhine region of Germany, where it has been cultivated since at least the 15th century. The grape thrives in cool climates with significant diurnal temperature variation, allowing for slow ripening that preserves acidity while developing complex aromatics. Beyond its German homeland, Riesling has found success in Alsace, France, where it produces notably different expressions, as well as in Australia's Clare Valley and Eden Valley, Austria's cooler regions, and select high-altitude sites elsewhere.
Riesling wines display pronounced aromatic intensity, ranging from citrus and stone fruit notes in cooler climates to more tropical fruit characteristics in warmer regions. The grape's naturally high acidity provides excellent structure and aging potential, while its ability to retain residual sugar creates a spectrum from bone-dry to lusciously sweet styles. Young Rieslings often show primary fruit flavors, while aged examples develop complex petroleum, honey, and mineral notes that reflect their terroir.
The grape's versatility extends from Germany's Mosel, where slate soils produce ethereal, low-alcohol wines, to Alsace's volcanic soils that yield more powerful, food-friendly expressions. Riesling's acidity makes it particularly compatible with spicy Asian cuisines, rich pork dishes, and seafood preparations, while sweeter styles complement foie gras and blue cheeses.
