The Château de Fargues is a prestigious wine producer located in the Sauternes appellation of the Bordeaux region in France. The estate has a history dating back to the 15th century and has been in the Lur Saluces family for over 600 years. It is known for producing some of the finest and most sought-after sweet white wines in the world.
The Sauternes appellation is located on the left bank of the Garonne river, just south of the city of Bordeaux. The region is known for its unique microclimate that is ideal for the growth of botrytis cinerea, also known as "noble rot", which is essential for producing the sweet and complex wines that Sauternes is famous for. The Château de Fargues estate covers 14 hectares of land, with 13 hectares dedicated to vineyards where the grapes are grown for their signature wine.
The Château de Fargues is classified as a Premier Cru Classé (First Growth) in the official 1855 Bordeaux classification, a testament to the quality of its wines. The main grape variety grown on the estate is Sémillon, with smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle also used in the production of their wines. The grapes are hand-harvested in several passes, allowing for only the ripest and most affected by noble rot grapes to be selected for the final blend.
The Château de Fargues produces only one wine, their eponymous Château de Fargues, which is a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. The wine is aged for 24-36 months in French oak barrels, adding complexity and depth to the final product. It is a beautifully balanced wine, with intense aromas of honey, apricot, and candied fruit, and a rich and velvety texture on the palate.
