I found an unusually modern and fruit-driven 2018 Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that has for a long time been one of the icons of traditionalism in Chile. It's juicy and ripe with a soft palate and round tannins, relatively simple for the price. 14,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2020 after 18 months in barrel, 83% of them new, but the oak is unnoticeable.
The wine has layers of flavors, the first are fruit, then come the herbal and, after them, the spices. An important change in style towards a more subtle side. This Casa Real is 100% cabernet sauvignon that comes from the Carnero Viejo vineyard, planted 50 years ago on the sandy soils of Alto Jahuel, in the Maipo Valley.
One of the more classical and typical Maipo Cabernets has to be the Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon, a serious, balsamic, minty and balanced red with varietal character, fine tannins and a supple finish. It's a powerful and concentrated yet elegant Cabernet with the character of the place.
