Yellow orchard fruit, melon, papaya and pineapple nose. A luscious mouthfeel of ripe melon and red apple balanced by lively acidity, creamy oak and a poised and precise finish. A serious quality contender with a long, poised and precise finish. Pitch-perfect now but still lots of life ahead.
A blend of mostly Chardonnay with a small selection of other white grapes, the Elena Walch 2018 Alto Adige Beyond the Clouds is fragrant and bright with a little sliver of Italian sunshine locked deep within. It reveals yellow rose, orchard fruit, dried apricot, pine nut and acacia honey. This vintage is less overtly perfumed than previous editions I have tasted. Beyond the Clouds appears dry in terms of mouthfeel in 2018, whereas previous vintages showed a little more softness and fruity plushness. If this vintage represents a turning point in the wine's style, I give it two thumbs up. I love the linearity and the refreshing acidity. Production is 14,000 bottles.
The 2017 Alto Adige Beyond The Clouds shows fragrant white flower aromas with a clear hydrocarbon-like signature of petrol and diesel fuel. Those latter aromas are even more pronounced in a hot and dry vintage such as this that tends to concentrate overall flavors and extract. This wine opens to a pretty golden appearance with tropical fruit aromas and a heavy, mid-weight texture. I would suggest a shorter drinking window here compared to recent past editions of this wine from cooler vintages. The base of the blend is Chardonnay, but many other white varieties are mixed in. Some 14,000 bottles were made.

Elena Walch is a leading family-run winery in South Tyrol, the flagship of Italian wine production and internationally renowned. Promoter of quality and innovation, Elena Walch has contributed to leading the South Tyrolean qualitative revolution thus earning great local and international consideration. Architect by profession, Elena Walch married the heir to one of the oldest winemaking families in the region, bringing with her new concepts of modernization of the traditional company.

Today the business management is entrusted to the daughters Julia and Karoline Walch, the fifth generation of the family. The company philosophy is closely linked to its terroir: the principle is that the wines must be a unique expression of their soil, climate and work done in the vineyard, and that the vineyard must be worked according to the principles of sustainability and as such left in legacy to the next generations.

The profound belief that the quality of wine is born in the vineyard therefore brings with it the desire to work without compromise, respecting the individual characteristics of the single vineyard. With 60 hectares under cultivation, among which the two vineyards VIGNA Castel Ringberg in Caldaro and VIGNA Kastelaz in Termeno stand out, Elena Walch is one of the most important winemakers in South Tyrol. The wines are distinguished by character, elegance and strong personality, combined with the highest professionalism of realization.

The superb climatic conditions and the exceptional location of the estates result in fresh and fruity white wines, as well as concentrated and smooth red wines.

The Alto Adige DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is a prestigious wine appellation located in the northernmost part of Italy, nestled in the region of South Tyrol, also known as Südtirol. This area is renowned for its unique blend of Italian and Austrian cultures, which is reflected in its winemaking traditions and the varietal diversity. The region's cool climate and high altitude create an ideal environment for growing a variety of grapes, leading to the production of wines with distinct freshness and aromatic intensity.

Alto Adige DOC is especially noted for its white wines, such as Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc, which are highly appreciated for their crispness, elegance, and aromatic complexity. The area also produces excellent reds, including Schiava and Lagrein, which are cherished for their robust flavors and smooth tannins. These wines typically exhibit characteristics influenced by the terroir, such as mineral notes derived from the mountainous terrain and a vibrant acidity due to the cooler growing conditions.

The Alto Adige DOC appellation ensures that all wines produced under its label meet rigorous standards of quality and authenticity. This is achieved through strict regulations governing viticulture and winemaking practices, including yield limits, grape varieties, and aging requirements. As a result, Alto Adige DOC wines are not only a symbol of high quality but also a true expression of the region's rich cultural heritage and winemaking expertise.
