The Pira cru is a Roagna family monopoly. They purchased this site (in Castiglione Falletto) in 1990, and the vines range from 40 to 50 years old. The 2014 Barolo Pira opens to dark and impeccably focused fruit. This wine offers an incredible level of sharpness and detail that adds a vivid, Technicolor character to the bouquet. The aromas are lifted, bright and vertical, fuelled by the power and elegance that comes so naturally to Nebbiolo. There is zest and energy here, with plenty of acidity and tannic structure to liven up the finish. Exactly 12,984 bottles were produced, making this the easiest Roagna wine to locate at your local retailer.
The 2013 Barolo Pira sees fruit sourced from a five-hectare plot (with 16,800 bottles made). The Pira vineyard is Roagna’s home-base parcel and is the biggest single vineyard the family cultivates in the Barolo appellation. Pira is easy to recognize in terms of bouquet, thanks to those distinctive aromas of dried rose petal and balsam herb that lift gently from the bouquet. Due to long maceration times, which are the norm here at Roagna, the wine’s colour shows medium intensity, but that colour should be fixed and stable over the long haul because any remaining material in suspension has since fallen out, thanks to the slow fermentation process. This wine delivers evident structure and a touch of rawness or naked nerve that underlines the wine’s young age (and, consequently, its long future ageing potential). Dark fruit and a touch of sweet spice add volume to the finish.
This drop-dead gorgeous red dazzles with an enticing fragrance of perfumed berry, fragrant blue flower, dark spice and camphor. Elegantly structured and focused, the taut, savory palate boasts remarkable finesse, vibrancy and a great depth of flavors including juicy red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and baking spice. It has incredible energy and balance thanks to taut, refined tannins and bright acidity.

Roagna is a renowned wine producer located in the Piedmont region of Italy. The winery has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century when it was founded by the Roagna family. The family has been producing wine for generations, and their passion for winemaking is evident in the quality of their products.

Roagna is known for its traditional winemaking methods, which involve using only natural yeasts and avoiding any chemical additives. The winery also follows biodynamic principles, which means that they work in harmony with nature to produce the best possible grapes.

The winery produces a range of wines, including Barbaresco, Barolo, and Nebbiolo d'Alba. These wines are made using the traditional method of extended maceration, which involves leaving the grape skins in contact with the juice for an extended period. This process helps to extract more flavour and tannins from the grapes, resulting in wines that are full-bodied and complex.

Roagna's Barbaresco wines are particularly noteworthy, as they are made using grapes from some of the best vineyards in the region. The winery produces several different Barbaresco wines, each with its own unique character and flavour profile. These wines are aged in oak barrels for several years before being released, which helps to soften the tannins and add complexity to the wine.

In addition to their red wines, Roagna also produces a range of white wines, including Chardonnay and Arneis. These wines are made using the same traditional methods as their red wines, and are known for their crisp acidity and bright fruit flavours.

Overall, Roagna is a producer that is highly respected in the wine world for their commitment to traditional winemaking methods and their dedication to producing high-quality wines. Their wines are sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts around the world, and are sure to impress even the most discerning palate.

Barolo is a red wine produced in the Piedmont region of Italy. It is made from the Nebbiolo grape, which is known for its high tannins and acidity. Barolo has a long history, dating back to the 19th century when it was first produced in the town of Barolo. Today, it is one of Italy's most famous and prestigious wines.

Barolo is produced using traditional methods, with the grapes being hand-harvested and then fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two years, although some producers age their Barolo for up to five years or more. This extended aging process gives Barolo its characteristic complexity and depth of flavour.

Barolo is known for its rich, full-bodied flavour, with notes of cherry, plum, and leather. It has a high tannin content, which gives it a firm structure and a long finish. Barolo is often described as a "wine for aging", as it can improve in the bottle for many years.

Some of the top Barolo producers include Giacomo Conterno, Bruno Giacosa, and Roberto Voerzio. These producers are known for their commitment to quality and their use of traditional methods. Barolo is also produced in several different appellations, including Barolo, Barbaresco, and Langhe.

Overall, Barolo is a wine that is steeped in history and tradition. Its rich flavour and complex character make it a favourite among wine enthusiasts around the world. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or a casual drinker, Barolo is a wine that is sure to impress.
