Nerello Mascalese

Nerello Mascalese is an indigenous red grape variety of Sicily, with its origins tracing back centuries on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. This ancient variety has adapted perfectly to the mineral-rich volcanic soils and high-altitude vineyards of eastern Sicily, where it finds ideal growing conditions in the dramatic landscape surrounding Europe's most active volcano. The grape's name derives from the town of Mascali, located on Etna's eastern slopes.

Wines made from Nerello Mascalese typically display a distinctive aromatic profile featuring red cherry, strawberry, and floral notes, often accompanied by characteristic volcanic minerality and subtle herbal undertones. The grape produces wines with moderate alcohol levels, bright acidity, and refined tannins that create an elegant, medium-bodied structure. These wines often exhibit a unique combination of fruit freshness and earthy complexity that reflects their volcanic terroir.

The Etna DOC represents the primary appellation for Nerello Mascalese, where the grape must comprise at least 80% of red wine blends. The variety's natural acidity and moderate tannins make it an excellent companion to Sicilian cuisine, particularly grilled vegetables, tomato-based pasta dishes, and Mediterranean seafood preparations. The wines also pair well with aged cheeses and charcuterie.
