Domaine Ghislain Kohut is a small producer based in Gevrey-Chambertin, one of Burgundy's most prestigious communes in the Côte de Nuits. The domaine focuses on still wines, primarily Pinot Noir from the village and surrounding appellations, alongside a small production of white wine from Aligote.

Gevrey-Chambertin is distinguished by its clay-limestone soils and cool continental climate, conditions that favor the production of structured, age-worthy Pinot Noirs with considerable depth and complexity. The commune is home to numerous grand cru and premier cru vineyards, and village-level wines from the area typically display the darker fruit characteristics and mineral backbone characteristic of northern Burgundy's finest expressions.

The current range reflects work across three distinct Burgundian appellations: Gevrey-Chambertin village wines, the lighter Marsannay rouge, and Bourgogne Aligoté. This selection demonstrates engagement with both the signature red wines of the northern Côte de Nuits and the traditional white wine of Burgundy's Aligote grape, which in the region's cooler sites can achieve considerable freshness and mineral precision.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

Bourgogne Aligoté is an appellation within Burgundy, France, established in 1937. It encompasses vineyards across the region where Aligoté is grown as the primary white grape variety. The appellation represents a secondary classification within Burgundy's hierarchy, distinct from the more prestigious Chardonnay-based appellations, yet historically significant as a traditional Burgundian white wine category.

The appellation's vineyards benefit from Burgundy's continental climate with moderate rainfall and exposure to afternoon sun. Soils vary across the region but typically include limestone and clay elements characteristic of the broader Burgundy area. Aligoté is the sole permitted variety for these wines, and production follows standard Burgundian white winemaking practices, typically including fermentation in stainless steel or neutral vessels to preserve the grape's natural characteristics. The wines are generally produced in a dry style with moderate alcohol content.

Wines from Bourgogne Aligoté are characterised by crisp acidity and lean minerality. They typically display green fruit notes—particularly green apple and citrus—with subtle herbal undertones. These are food-friendly, refreshing white wines designed for relatively near-term consumption, though well-made examples can develop complexity with several years of bottle age. Historically, Aligoté from this region has served as an everyday drinking wine in Burgundy, valued for its versatility with regional cuisine and lighter preparations.
