Agricola Punica

Agricola Punica is a Sardinian wine estate operating under the Isola dei Nuraghi IGT appellation. The project is a collaboration between Giacomo Tachis, the influential Tuscan oenologist credited with shaping many of Italy's modern red wines, and Cantina di Santadi, one of Sardinia's leading cooperative producers. The estate focuses on red wine production from vineyards in the southwest of the island, in the Sulcis area.

Isola dei Nuraghi IGT is a broad appellation that allows producers to work with both indigenous Sardinian varieties and international grapes, giving estates like Punica flexibility to blend across traditions. Sardinia's southwest, with its ancient Phoenician and Carthaginian heritage, has long cultivated Carignan — known locally as Carignano — in old bush-vine plantings that produce concentrated, structured fruit. The warm Mediterranean climate and well-drained soils of the Sulcis peninsula provide conditions well suited to full-bodied reds.

Montessu, Punica's principal red wine, brings together Carignan with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah. This blend reflects the estate's approach of grounding international varieties in a distinctly Sardinian context, with Carignan typically providing the backbone and a characteristic savory, earthy depth that sets it apart from purely varietal interpretations of the French grapes in the blend.
