Antinori is the most famous name in Italian wine and the influence of Piero Antinori in the last 25 years has been nothing short of revolutionary. Antinori's flagship wine, Tignanello, first appeared in 1971 and caused a sensation by its use of Cabernet Sauvignon in a Sangiovese blend and with its practice of ageing in small French barriques. Antinori was accused of vinous treachery and treason but soon barrique-aged blends of Sangiovese and Cabernet began appearing all across Tuscany.

Puglia occupies the heel of Italy's boot, stretching along the Adriatic and Ionian coasts in the country's southeastern corner. This region has transformed from a bulk wine producer into a source of quality wines, leveraging its extensive vineyard area—among Italy's largest—and favorable Mediterranean climate. The region's flat to gently rolling terrain, punctuated by ancient olive groves, has supported viticulture since Greek colonization over two millennia ago.

The hot, dry summers and mild winters create ideal conditions for ripening red grape varieties, while cooling sea breezes from both coasts help moderate temperatures during the growing season. The diverse soils range from limestone and clay in the north to iron-rich red earth in the south. Key appellations include Primitivo di Manduria DOC in the Salento peninsula, known for powerful red wines, and Castel del Monte DOC in the north-central area, which produces both reds and whites from hillside vineyards.

Primitivo, genetically identical to California's Zinfandel, dominates red wine production and thrives in Puglia's warm climate, producing wines ranging from fruity and approachable to concentrated and age-worthy. Negroamaro, native to the region, creates deeply colored wines often blended with other varieties. Aglianico, more associated with neighboring regions, also finds expression here, particularly in the Castel del Monte area where it produces structured, tannic wines with aging potential.

Castel del Monte DOC is located in the Puglia region of southern Italy, established as a Denominazione di Origine Controllata in 1971. The appellation takes its name from the 13th-century octagonal castle built by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, which sits prominently in the landscape and serves as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The zone encompasses hillsides and plateaus in the provinces of Bari and Barletta-Andria-Trani, positioned inland from the Adriatic coast.

The appellation enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters, while the terrain consists of calcareous clay soils mixed with limestone and tuff. Castel del Monte DOC permits both red and white wine production from various grape varieties, including international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay alongside indigenous Puglian grapes such as Aglianico, Uva di Troia, and Bombino Bianco. The regulations allow for both varietal wines and blends, with specific minimum percentage requirements depending on the grape variety listed on the label.

Wines from Castel del Monte DOC demonstrate the potential of Puglia's inland terroir to produce structured, age-worthy wines that differ markedly from the region's traditional bulk wine production. Red wines, particularly those made from Aglianico, tend to show concentrated dark fruit flavors with firm tannins and good acidity, benefiting from the cooling influence of elevation and the mineral-rich soils. The appellation has gained recognition for producing wines that balance the warmth of southern Italy's climate with sufficient structure and complexity for serious wine appreciation.
