From a parcel in Les Rouges du Bas, the 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru offers up attractive aromas of smoky red fruits, spices, charcuterie, and toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, firm, and expansive, with a broad, open-knit profile.
The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru, which unlike the Clos Vougeot was severely hit by the frost, was missing some fruité on the nose, stubborn and rather withdrawn. The palate is medium-bodied with broad tannin, good acidity but there is sense that the frost denuded this grand cru of its nobility, thus the finish feels rather smudged and monotone. I found this disappointing because of what happened in the vineyard rather than any winemaking fault.
Jadot's 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru is showing brilliantly from bottle, offering up a youthfully reserved but beautifully pure nose of raspberry, black cherry, rose petal, violet, subtle incense and a nicely integrated framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is ample, full-bodied and succulent, with bright acids and a superb sense of control despite its scale, its tannins fine-grained but formidable. To reiterate, this is firmly shut down at present, and while its potential is considerable it is likely to remain that way for a good decade.
The 2013 Echezeaux has a very refined bouquet with delineated raspberry, crushed strawberry and Morello cherry scents that are underpinned by fine mineral notes. The palate is medium bodied with crisp tannin, fine acidity and quite a linear finish that will need time to really get into its stride. It comes across as a light, polite Echezeaux at present.
The 2012 Echezeaux Grand Cru has a sensual, expressive, kaleidoscopic bouquet with wonderful vibrant blackberry, cassis and blueberry scents infused with minerals. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine, sappy red berry fruit, a citric thread of racy acidity that neatly offsets the extravagant finish. There is plenty to savour on the vibrant, vivacious Echezeaux.
The 2009 Echezeaux comes across as tightly wound, a sign that bodes very well for the future. The wine begins to grow in the glass as the fruit gains volume and pure textural richness. Firm tannins frame an intense, powerful finish laced with tar, liquorice, sweet spices and smoke.
