Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot is based in Vosne-Romanée, one of Burgundy's most celebrated villages in the Côte de Nuits. The domaine produces Pinot Noir wines from this prestigious appellation, where fine-grained tannins and aromatic complexity are the hallmarks of the terroir.

Vosne-Romanée is renowned for producing some of Burgundy's most elegant and age-worthy red wines. The village's diverse soil composition—a mix of limestone, clay, and iron-rich elements—yields wines with distinctive mineral character and subtle dark fruit flavors. Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot works with this classic Burgundian framework, focusing on the appellation's traditional expression of Pinot Noir.

The domaine's current range includes village-level Vosne-Romanée, where Pinot Noir from the appellation demonstrates the balance typical of the region: structure enough to reward cellaring, yet approachable in its youth.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

Clos de Vougeot is a Grand Cru appellation located in the Côte d'Or department of Burgundy, France. The vineyard encompasses 50 hectares within the commune of Vougeot, making it the largest Grand Cru site in the Côte de Nuits. The appellation takes its name from the historic Château du Clos de Vougeot, built by Cistercian monks who developed the vineyard from the 12th century onward and established the stone walls that still define its boundaries today.

The vineyard sits at elevations between 240 and 270 meters on gentle slopes with predominantly limestone and clay soils. Pinot Noir is the sole permitted grape variety, as is standard for red Grand Cru appellations in the Côte de Nuits. The large size of the vineyard means significant variation in terroir across different parcels, with the upper slopes generally producing wines of greater concentration and aging potential than those from the lower, flatter sections near the main road.

Clos de Vougeot wines typically display the structured, mineral-driven character associated with Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir. The wines often exhibit red and black fruit flavors with earthy undertones and firm tannins that require several years of cellaring to fully develop. Due to the appellation's size and the number of different producers working within its boundaries, styles can vary considerably depending on the specific vineyard parcel and winemaking approach.
