Mencia

Mencía is an indigenous red grape variety native to northwest Spain, particularly concentrated in the regions of Bierzo in Castilla y León and parts of Galicia. The variety is believed to have ancient origins in the Iberian Peninsula, where it has been cultivated for centuries in the mountainous terrain along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Mencía thrives in the slate and clay soils of these regions, benefiting from the continental climate with Atlantic influences that provide significant diurnal temperature variation.

Mencía produces wines with bright acidity and moderate tannins, typically displaying a medium body with elegant structure. The grape exhibits distinctive aromatic qualities, often showing red berry fruits like cherry and raspberry, complemented by floral notes of violet and mineral undertones derived from the schist soils. These wines generally possess good aging potential while remaining approachable in their youth, with many expressing earthy, herbal characteristics alongside their fruit-forward profile.

Bierzo stands as the most important appellation for Mencía, where the grape benefits from high-altitude vineyards and the region's unique terroir. The variety pairs well with roasted meats, game, and traditional Spanish dishes, particularly those featuring paprika and regional charcuterie. Mencía's natural acidity and moderate alcohol levels also make it suitable for pairing with grilled vegetables and aged cheeses.
