Castello Banfi is a wine estate located in Tuscany's Brunello di Montalcino DOCG zone, one of Italy's most celebrated wine regions. The estate produces wines from vineyards situated in the hills surrounding the medieval town of Montalcino, where the unique combination of soil, elevation, and climate creates ideal conditions for Sangiovese cultivation.

The Brunello di Montalcino appellation requires wines to be made entirely from Sangiovese grapes and aged for a minimum of five years before release, including at least two years in oak. This extended aging process develops the wine's characteristic complexity, with notes of cherry, leather, and earth, along with firm tannins that allow for decades of cellaring. The region's galestro and alberese soils, combined with significant diurnal temperature variation, contribute to the wines' distinctive structure and longevity.

Castello Banfi's current production focuses on traditional Brunello di Montalcino, crafted from 100% Sangiovese grapes. Their approach reflects the appellation's strict standards and the estate's commitment to expressing the terroir of this renowned Tuscan wine zone.

Piemonte (Piedmont) occupies most of northwestern Italy, bordering Switzerland in the north and France in the west and almost reaching the Mediterranean coast. Its capital and largest city is Turin (Torino).

In the wine world, Piemonte is best known for the twin titans of Barolo and Barbaresco, along with other popular red wines made from Barbera and Dolcetto, the white Gavi, and sparkling Asti.

It has more DOCGs (17) and DOCs (42) than any other region (see maps: Asti area, Langhe, Monferrato, and northern), but no IGPs. In 2016, Piemonte produced 2.5 million hl (28.3 million cases) of wine, the majority of it (55%) red and 83% at the DOP level. The region’s primary grape varieties are Barbera (31%), Moscato (22%), Dolcetto (13%), and Nebbiolo (10%).

Gavi DOCG is located in southeastern Piedmont, Italy, encompassing eleven communes in the province of Alessandria. The appellation was elevated to DOCG status in 1998, having previously held DOC designation since 1974. The zone centers around the historic town of Gavi, with vineyards planted on the rolling hills that form part of the transition between the Po Valley and the Ligurian Apennines.

The region's continental climate is moderated by maritime influences from the nearby Ligurian coast. Soils are predominantly calcareous marl and limestone, providing excellent drainage and mineral complexity. Only the Cortese grape variety is permitted for Gavi DOCG wines, which must be produced entirely from this indigenous white variety. The wines are typically fermented in stainless steel to preserve their natural acidity and fresh character, though some producers experiment with oak aging or extended lees contact.

Gavi wines are characterized by their crisp acidity, mineral backbone, and delicate fruit flavors. The wines typically display notes of green apple, pear, and citrus, often accompanied by distinctive floral aromatics and a characteristic almond finish. The limestone-rich soils contribute a notable mineral tension that gives these wines their signature elegance and food-pairing versatility.
