Château de Fonbel

Château de Fonbel is a red wine producer based in Saint-Émilion, one of Bordeaux's most significant appellations situated on the Right Bank of the Gironde. The estate produces wine under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru classification, a tier that encompasses a broad range of properties within the appellation and is subject to periodic review under the Saint-Émilion classification system.

Saint-Émilion is defined by its limestone plateau, clay slopes, and varied soils that favour Merlot as the dominant variety, typically blended with Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon. Wines from this appellation tend toward a rounder, more supple structure than those from the Médoc, with Merlot contributing plum and dark fruit character, while Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift and structure. The Grand Cru designation requires a minimum alcohol level, manual harvesting, and estate bottling, among other conditions.

The estate's wines follow this classic Right Bank blend, drawing on Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 vintage was broadly considered a strong year in Bordeaux, characterised by concentration and balance following a warm, dry growing season that allowed grapes to reach full physiological ripeness across the region.
