Tennessee occupies a unique position in American spirits production, situated in the southeastern United States between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. While not traditionally known for wine production, Tennessee has established itself as a significant whiskey-producing state, most notably as the home of Tennessee whiskey, a distinct category of American whiskey that must be produced in Tennessee and filtered through maple charcoal.

The state's geography encompasses diverse terrain from mountainous regions in the east to rolling hills and river valleys in the central and western areas. Tennessee's climate features hot, humid summers and mild winters, with ample rainfall that supports the growth of corn and other grains essential for whiskey production. The limestone-rich water sources, particularly around Lynchburg and other whiskey-producing areas, contribute minerality that distillers prize for both fermentation and proofing.

Tennessee whiskey production centers around a few key areas, with Lynchburg being perhaps the most famous due to its association with major distilleries. The defining characteristic of Tennessee whiskey is the Lincoln County Process, which involves filtering the new-make spirit through maple charcoal before barrel aging. This process, combined with Tennessee's traditional mash bills heavy in corn, creates whiskeys with distinctive smoothness and subtle smoky notes that differentiate them from bourbon produced in neighboring Kentucky.
