Roussanne

Roussanne

Roussanne is a white grape variety native to France's northern Rhône Valley, where it has been cultivated for centuries alongside its traditional blending partner Marsanne. The grape thrives in the granite soils and continental climate of appellations like Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage, though it has also found success in the southern Rhône and Languedoc regions. Roussanne tends to be more challenging to cultivate than Marsanne, with lower yields and greater susceptibility to disease, but produces wines of notable complexity and aging potential.

Roussanne typically displays a distinctive aromatic profile featuring white flowers, honey, and herbal notes, often with hints of pear and citrus. The wines tend to be medium to full-bodied with notable acidity and a characteristic slightly oily texture. Unlike its blending partner Marsanne, Roussanne contributes more pronounced aromatics and acidity to blends, while pure Roussanne wines can develop complex nutty and honeyed characteristics with age.

In the northern Rhône, Roussanne appears in the white wines of Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage, usually blended with Marsanne in varying proportions. The grape also contributes to white blends in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and other southern Rhône appellations. These wines pair particularly well with rich fish dishes, poultry in cream sauces, and mature cheeses, with aged examples complementing more complex preparations featuring nuts or honey.
