The 2007 Brut Blanc de Blancs Blanc des Millénaires is the seventh opus of this vintage after the 1983, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2004 and 2006 vintages. This 100% Chardonnay exhales aromas of candied lemon, lemon oil, spring flowers, ripe orchard fruits and hints of pastry. The palate is coated and fleshy, rich and dense, with racy acids and a chalky, penetrating finish.
Recently disgorged with seven grams per litre dosage, the 2006 Brut Blanc de Blancs Blanc des Millénaires is expressive and charming, in keeping with the sunny, demonstrative style of the vintage. Offering up aromas of toasted brioche, honeycomb, yellow apples and preserved citrus, it's full-bodied, fleshy and textural, with a rich core of fruit, ripe acids and an attractive pinpoint mousse. It's already drinking well, and I'd be inclined to approach it sooner than the more tightly wound-2004 rendition.
Disgorged in November 2017 after 13 years on the lees, the stunning 2004 Blanc des Millénaires is a worthy successor to the 1995. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of green apple, pear, brioche and fresh pastry that are framed by a lovely smoky, autolytic top note, the wine is full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with ripe acids, superb depth at the core and a textural, vinous quality while remaining very classical in profile. The finish is long and expansive. A blend of Chardonnay from Cramant, Avize, Oger, Mesnil-sur-Oger and Vertus, it saw nine grams per litre dosage. This is a terrific blanc de blancs from Charles Heidsieck that has a long and glorious future ahead of it.
Disgorged 20 years ago, the golden-coloured 1985 Blanc des Millenaires – comprised of 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir – displays a deep and beautifully matured nose with wax, honey, caramel and butterscotch aromas. Full-flavoured, rich and highly elegant in the mouth, with great intensity, structure and complexity in the aromas, this 31-year-old prestige cuvée is fascinatingly vital – although there are almost no bubbles visible. There are dried stone fruit flavours in the finish. A great drinking experience.

Champagne Charles Heidsieck was founded in 1851 by Charles-Camille Heidsieck. An entrepreneur and visionary, he designed the house in his image and a wine reflecting his personality. Thanks to his charm and ear for languages, Charles confidently toured his champagne around Europe, rapidly earning praise and accolades from the Universal Exhibitions and a reputation with Europe’s most prominent royal courts. Charles’ pioneering spirit meant that he quickly became an ambassador for champagne in America, back when the ‘New World’ was still a mystery for many.

Reflecting Charles’ independent character in the champagne remains significant to this day and is the role of Cyril Brun, Chef de Caves, who consistently expresses the Charles Heidsick style - complex, deep, generous wines, always with precision.

Given the importance of blending and ageing, Charles invested in the development of crayères dating back from the 2nd century; a labyrinth of 47 chalk cellars, connected by galleries, located 65 feet underground. These were given UNESCO World Heritage status in July 2015. Throughout the years the House has maintained a firm commitment to ageing, making Charles Heidsieck one of the most awarded champagnes in the world.

In 1668, Dom Pérignon is said to have discovered how to make sparkling wine; today his technique is used the world over, although Champagne continues to make some of the finest. France’s most northerly wine region, Champagne is now home to 15,000 growers and 290 ‘houses’. A blend of grape varieties is usually required: white Chardonnay to add fruit and elegance, and two reds – Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – to provide body and backbone.
